Wadi Rum
5 – 6 August
By the time we were riding through the desert in Wadi Rum I
was over the heat, rocks, sand, and flies. Those bloody
persistent flies that just wouldn’t let up and made it
nearly impossible to have a snooze when we stopped under
some shade for a short break and lunch. But it was a lovely
way to see the area with the wind blowing through the back
of the jeep while we were driving along.
Just before dusk we reached our campsite which consisted of
a couple of huge Bedouin camel hair tents, decorated with
colourful rugs and cushions. The sand had cooled down
significantly and it was a wonderful feeling to be able to
dig our toes in as we sat and watched the sunset over the
desert.
After a traditional Bedouin meal and entertainment we set up
our sleeping bags on the sand in front of the tents and
settled in for the night. It was an awesome experience for a
city girl to snuggle up in a sleeping bag and watch the star
filled sky – I have never seen the Milky Way so clearly or
seen so many shooting stars! It was just beautiful and I
didn’t want to go to sleep.
